World Rivers Day takes place at the end of September. Its goal is to raise awareness about the protection of rivers, the importance of clean water, and the conservation of riparian habitats. On this occasion, I wrote the following poem:
Hubbub on the Meadow
I stretch out comfortably along the banks of the Cam, on the velvety green tapestry, among the gathered, gossiping crowd of wildflowers, as they whisper, leaning their heads together in the swaying wind. Curiously I observe their rustling complaints, how they fret with anxious fidgeting, craning their necks, peering and staring toward the river. As I stand up to see more closely what causes their stunned concern, stepping toward the bank, the clusters of reeds cordon off the river like policemen, and leaning strictly toward me with their cattails, herd me along. The willow trees, lingering on the bank, lean over the bed with keen interest, dangling their gaze into it as if the water's surface were a microscope lens, looking like a council of consulting physicians. The river—the vein of Mother Earth— is examined by a fallen, forked tree trunk, steadily keeping its stump on the throbbing pulse of the current. The mallards dive, scouting the river’s disorders like bustling medical assistants, and amidst thick quacking, they report that the accumulation of silt, the spread of algae, microplastics, chemicals— like bad cholesterol deposited on artery walls— are clogging the riverbed. Beating the water's surface with the flurry of their wings, they cry out in panic to the restless onlookers: the fish, choked in an oxygen-starved trap, have their gills flooded by the thickening toxins, while the crayfish fear the crayfish plague. Meanwhile, the kingfisher also speaks up, voicing his grievance: how many of his feathered friends have vanished without a trace, and there is no one held responsible… The water voles chime in, indignantly signaling their shrinking habitats. The whole meadow hums in outrage, the noise in my head grows louder… and ashamed of my human kind, away from the peace of nature, I rush home.

Szeptember végén lesz a folyók világnapja.
Ricsaj a mezőn
Kényelmesen nyúlok el a Cam partja mentén a pázsitos zöld kárpiton, mezei virágok odasereglett pletykás tömegében, ahogy sugdolózva fejüket egymásnak döntik a ringatózó, szélben. Kíváncsian szemlélem sustorgó panaszkodásukat, ahogy tipródnak szorongva izegve mozogva, fejüket nyújtóztatva a folyó felé fürkészőn bámészkodva. Ahogy felállok, hogy közelebbről lássam mi okozza döbbent aggodalmukat a part felé haladva, a nád csoportosulásai, a folyót, rendőrként elkordonozzák, s buzogányaikkal szigorúan felém hajolva terelnek tovább. A vízi pockok helyeselnek, s felháborodva jelzik beszűkült élettereik. Zsong az egész rét méltatlankodva, a zaj a fejemben egyre nagyobb… s emberi mivoltom szégyenlve, a természet nyugalmából hazarohanok.
